Chapter 1-- Legendary Audio I.C.E. (In Case of Emergency) Overview
Thank you for purchasing the Legendary Audio In Case of Emergency or 'I.C.E' Plug-In! I.C.E. will make your Audio/Life better.
I.C.E User Interface
(See Page XX)
A primary purpose of this Plugin is to combat distortion in very precise Frequency Bands to eliminate or reduce unwanted distortion making the audio “cleaner”, more pleasant, and enjoyable. It can correct problems caused by recording, equipment, or even inherent in the source subject. For example, I.C.E. can reduce or eliminate an unwanted tone or natural distortion in a vocal or instrument. I.C.E. can also be used to “sculpt” a recording by filling in or adding selected frequency bands with exact copies of the matching source band thereby increasing the volume of that range without changing the tone.

3.1 The I.C.E. Plug-In Window
This section describes the functionality of the I.C.E. plug-in window. This is the main window for I.C.E..
HINT: The primary control in I.C.E. is the TARGET Frequency Band control #1 above. |
3.1.1 Target Frequency Control
The primary control is the TARGET Frequency Band control. Use your mouse to move this control. This control moves the TARGET MARKER into the center of the Frequency Band that you are targeting to:
A. Remove or reduce offending program material
or
B. The Frequency Band that you are going to boost (see I.C.E. PLUS below)
Note that the Frequency Band TARGET frequency is indicated by a numerical number in the Target display window. This number represents the base Target Frequency in Hertz. An alternate way to move any of the TARGET Frequency Controls is to click-hold on the numerical display and drag up or down to increase or decrease the setting.
The Target Frequency Band can be expanded or reduced with the 2 slider buttons on the Left (lower range) or on the Right (higher range). As the sliders are moved, the corresponding Edge Frequencies are indicated numerically in the Low and High display windows. A graphic representing the parameters of the chosen Frequency Band is shown in a yellow colored band as INJECT is applied.
HINT: An alternate way to move any of the TARGET Frequency Controls is to click-hold on the numerical display and drag up or down to increase or decrease the setting.
|
3.1.2 Low Edge Frequency (in Hertz)
This is the left-most line on the Frequency Band Graphic display and the numerical indicator on the display window. It indicates the lowest parameter of the chosen Frequency Band in Hertz. An alternate way to move this Frequency Control is to click-hold on the numerical display and drag up or down to increase or decrease the setting
I.C.E. Note: Try a frequency band of 30 to 50 Hz on BOOST to add missing Sub-Bass to the Mix or Master. Use the Preset 'Thumpin' Bass 50 Hz(Gentle)' or 'Thumpin' Bass 50 Hz(Steep)' and adjust to your liking. |
3.1.3 Target Frequency Indicator (in Hertz)
This window displays the position of the TARGET FREQUENCY BAND CONTROL in Hertz. An alternate way to move the TARGET Frequency Control is to click-hold on the numerical display and drag up or down to increase or decrease the setting
3.1.4 High Edge Frequency (in Hertz)
This is the right-most line on the Frequency Band Graphic display and the numerical indicator on the display window. It indicates the highest parameter of the chosen Frequency Band in Hertz. An alternate way to move this Frequency Control is to click-hold on the numerical display and drag up or down to increase or decrease the setting
I.C.E. Note: Try adding "air" and harmonics with a frequency band from 12 to 14k on Boost. Use the Preset 'Aire 15kHz(Steep)' or 'Aire 15kHz(Gentle)' and adjust to your liking. |
3.1.5 Inject (in -dB)
INJECT is the amount of Counter Frequency that is applied to the Targeted Frequency Band. INJECT can be adjusted by clicking and dragging the round button under the TARGET CONTROL BUTTON or by clicking on the numerical INJECT indicator and dragging up or down. The amount of INJECT is shown in the INJECT display window. INJECT is also indicated by the yellow, orange, or red color on the Interface Display between the Low and High indicator lines.
HINT: An alternate way to move the INJECT Control is to click-hold on the numerical display and drag up or down to increase or decrease the setting. |
3.1.6 Slope Setting
Clocking the SLOPE button toggles the choice of GENTLE or STEEP slopes. GENTLE is a more powerful broadband setting. STEEP is a more tight and surgical setting.
GENTLE is the default state.
I.C.E. Note: Scanning with a small frequency band on Gentle Slope will disclose "pockets" of distortion. Diminishing these pockets by using I.C.E. will clean up the sound. |
3.1.7 High-Definition Meters
The Meters section graphically displays real-time indications of Peak, RMS and VU values with hyper-ballistic accuracy. At the top of the meter strips, The meter strip will turn red when an over-zero level is detected. The HOLD Button causes the OUTPUT METERS to indicate the highest peak until you CLEAR the display
3.1.8 Preset Recall Memory Bank
Shows settings Saved or Recalled for immediate selection. Clicking on 1, 2, 3, 4 activates that Preset. Clicking in the Text Field (black box) a menu appears allowing you to quickly Save or Load Presets.
I.C.E. Note: A new feature in Version 1.1 is the menu-based Presets Recall/Save selection list. By clicking inside one of the Preset Text Fields (black box), a menu appears: The I.C.E. Preset RECALL Menu
From this menu Presets can be opened and any new Presets the you make can be saved. |
I.C.E. Presets (New in version 1.1)
I.C.E. now includes 12 useful Presets:
Aire 15kHz(Gentle)
Aire 15kHz(Steep)
Less Mud(Gentle)
Less Mud(Steep)
Less Mud(Steep)
Mid Range Boost(Gentle)
Mid Range Boost(Steep)
Mid Range Control(Gentle)
Mid Range Control(Steep)
Sibilance Contol Female
Sibilance Contol Male
Thumpin' Bass 50 Hz(Gentle)
Thumpin' Bass 50 Hz(Steep)
These settings are designed to provide a starting point for using I.C.E. in everyday situations as well as teach you about different features of I.C.E.; for example how a Gentle vs. Steep SLOPE with the same TARGET and INJECT setting sounds on your music or track.
HINT: These Presets are just a starting point. There is no 'single magic setting' for I.C.E. so try a Preset, if you like it then adjust the TARGET, INJECT and SLOPE to your liking, then SAVE your Preset for later RECALL. |
I.C.E. Note: I.C.E. Presets are stored here: |
3.1.9 Boost Button
Clicking on the BOOST button engages I.C.E. PLUS. This is a very useful tool that allows the user to ADD a chosen Frequency Band to the program material. It can be used to “fill in “or boost areas in the Frequency Range. BOOST/ I.C.E. PLUS can increase the volume of segments that may need increased, such as Sub Frequencies, an instrumental solo passage, hi frequency “air” or “sparkle”, a snare drum impact, a bass guitar line etc. I.C.E. PLUS can do these volume changes without changing the tone as it is adding a copy of the original sound to the mix –not adding EQ.
I.C.E. Note: Boost is very precise. A maximum setting of -144 adds about 4 DB of round sound. Two instances of I.C.E. on Boost adds more than 8 DB. |
3.1.10 Monitor Button
Clicking the MONITOR button toggles from full range sound, with I.C.E. processing applied, to listening to the selected Target Frequency Band only.
HINT: Use the Monitor Button to listen to just TARGET area. This is useful for finding offending frequency areas. |
3.1.11 Bypass Button
The BYPASS button bypasses the I.C.E. machine completely and allows listening to the incoming source with no processing. This instant A/B/ comparison procedure is very useful to evaluate the difference the I.C.E. plugin is making.
3.1.12 Recall Buttons (Save and Recall)
The RECALL section is the feature that allows you to SAVE and Recall settings that you want to use in the future.
The OPEN Button takes you to the folder that contains settings that you have labeled and saved.
The SAVE Button allows you to instantly SAVE a setting that is opened and labeled.
The SAVE AS Button takes you to a folder that has a place to name or re-name the chosen setting.
The CLEAR Button allows you to clear the setting from the Recall Display window which is indicated by a green light.
The REVERT Button allows you to change your mind or undo a SAVE choice.
Chapter 4 -- How To Operate The I.C.E. Machine
This section describes how to use I.C.E.
First, open I.C.E. in your Audio Program as you would with any other plug-in. Then engage the BYPASS button and listen to the Audio. By listening, identify the problem or problems within the Audio. You, the operator, must decide the area (sound within the sound) to process. I.C.E. will diminish the Frequency Band you chose. If there is distortion in that Frequency Band it will diminish the distortion as well. If there is no distortion, I.C.E will simply lessen the volume and energy of the chosen band.
Is there apparent distortion? If so, what general frequency range is it? Is the bass distorted, which is the low range? Or is it vocals, which is the mid-range. Or is it hot cymbals, sibilance, or High-Range digital harshness? Once the problem is targeted, create a Frequency Band in the general area of the problem. You create the target Frequency Band by moving the center Frequency Band Control into the general area. If it is a small problematic area like one note or hot cymbals or sibilance, create a small band of 60 to 100 hertz width. If it’s a broad band problem, estimate the width of the problem and create a wider Frequency Band. Now click the Monitor Button. You will hear only the Frequency Band you have selected. If you hear the Audio problem within the Frequency Band you have selected, you are close, if not right on the problem. Now expand the Frequency Band range higher and /or lower by moving the TARGET Control Button and expanding or reducing the LOW and HIGH parameters to hear if your selected Frequency Band is covering the entire problem. Adjust it so that the Frequency Band only covers the problem and no more Frequencies than necessary. Now decide on how prominent the problem is, which will determine how much counter–frequency you should inject to attack the problem. Estimate the amount of INJECT and add it.
NOTE:You will not hear the effect of INJECT until you take I.C.E. off of Monitor Mode.
If the problem is subtle, use a small amount of Inject. (Maybe 10 to 20 on the 144 scale). If it is a very prominent problem, INJECT more Counter Frequency. Now click the Monitor Button and listen in Full range Mode. Listen to see if the problem is reduced or eliminated. Click on the BYPASS Button to compare the original versus the I.C.E.d version. Increase or reduce the amount of Inject to fine tune the procedure. Once maximum results are achieved, you can name and save the setting. You can recall it at any time. If there is more than one audio problem, you can open multiple instances of I.C.E. and use the same procedure to attack each problem. Another really cool feature of I.C.E. is the ability to scan the Audio for embedded distortion not readily apparent. Start with a small Frequency Band range and scan from Low to High in Monitor Mode. As you scan, you may hear pockets of distorted, nasty sound. If you find an offending Frequency Band and you determine that you would not want to hear such a bad sound, I.C.E.it and then listen to the difference. You will be able to discover areas of distortion that are not easily detected by ear. Removing these distorted pockets of sound results in a purified, cleaner, and more refined Audio. This is a boon to the digital recording so common in modern times. It is possible to return to the audio smoothness and clarity of yesteryear while still enjoying the benefits of digital recording. Note that I.C.E. works better than EQ or compression, in that I.C.E. removes distortion as it reduces gain. I.C.E. can be set to only process when the problematic event happens. As the target Frequency Band increases in gain, more I.C.E. counter-effect happens, making I.C.E. dynamically operative. EQ will cut continually, even when the problem isn’t occurring and EQ doesn’t reduce distortion like I.C.E. does– only gain.
To use ICE PLUS, engage the BOOST Button. Notice the button will change color to alert the user that ICE PLUS is engaged. The same procedure as above is used to assist in determining the optimum Frequency Band to Boost. Use the INJECT Control to adjust the amount of BOOST to add. The OUTPUT METERS will indicate the level of the output. Optimum use will increase a deficient Frequency Band and will not add too much overall gain as indicated by the OUTPUT METERS. The Gentle setting is the most effective Slope Setting for I.C.E.PLUS. The Steep setting is a little more surgical and may be just the thing for a specific problem. Try BOOST on these examples: BOOST/ ICE PLUS can increase the volume of segments that may need increased, such as Sub Frequencies, an instrumental solo passage, hi frequency “air” or “sparkle”, a snare drum impact, a bass guitar line etc. If more BOOST is needed, you can use 2 instances of I.C.E. to double the effect. Each recording will have its own audio characteristics, but you can “save” some frequently used settings, for example Sub Bass (30 to 50 Hz), Snare Attack (3k to 4k), Air (12k to 14k).
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE:
Understanding that I.C.E., on default setting, “Injects” a special digital cocktail that “erases” or “cleans up”, incrementally, the chosen Frequency Band (including the distortion, artifacts and unwanted tone), this knowledge can be very useful in this manner: Many times just cleaning up the selected Frequency Band by using the Inject control is quick and easy and all you need to do. However, if the distorted area is severe, you can add a greater amount of Inject to diminish the problems inherent in the Frequency Band you have chosen. You can take–away that area of sound even to the extent that it even becomes deficient sounding in the complete spectrum. For example, if the removed sound is in the high range, it will eventually sound dull and need more volume of that area to sound “equalized”. To maximize this distortion removal technique and accomplish the removal without sounding dull, open another instance of I.C.E. Name and save the setting on the first instance of I.C.E. and then open that setting in the second instance of I.C.E. This quickly gives you the exact setting parameters so you don’t have to take time to match them. Now engage the Boost setting on the second instance of I.C.E. Inject now becomes a Boost volume control adding a Mastering grade clean, pure increase in the volume of the Frequency Band you have diminished with the first instance of I.C.E. Understand that the first instance takes away the impurities in the sound such as distortion, artifacts, resonance, even reverb if desired and reduces the dynamics of the band in relationship with the source Frequency Band (compresses). The second instance Boosts the volume of the sanitized problem area so as to adjust the tone to the desirable range. Simply put, I.C.E. #1 cleans it out. I.C.E. #2 Boosts the volume of the cleaned Frequency Band back to the preferred volume to “equalize “it leaving behind the inherent problems.
A good way to demonstrate this technique is to find the “scratchy” sound on a violin using the Monitor feature. Diminish that sound using an instance of I.C.E. and then replace and Boost the same exact range back to a normal tonal range. Done properly it makes the instrument and player sound strikingly better.
AN EXPLAINATION OF TERMS AS USED IN RELATION TO THE USE OF I.C.E.
DISTORTION: technically – a falsified reproduction of an audio signal caused by change in the wave form of the original signal. I.C.E. USE DEFINITION: An offending sound or tone that is unintended or unpleasant due to anomalies in the recorded source or the recording process. Note: There is “good” and “bad “distortion”. I.C.E. can adjust the amount of both kinds at the will of the engineer.
RESONANT FREQUENCY: technically- a frequency capable of exciting a resonance maximum in a given body or system. I.C.E.USE DEFINITION: A frequency in an instrument or combination of sounds that vibrates in sympathy causing a rise in volume of that instrument or combination of sounds in that specific frequency range.A common example is Bass guitar. Many have a resonant frequency that manifests in a louder note or notes than the other notes played on the same instrument. A boom, boom, BOOM, difference when a particular note is played. I.C.E. works better than EQ to level a Resonant Frequency as an EQ cuts that frequency range of all sound in the mix constantly. I.C.E. only affects that frequency when the dynamic event occurs. Until then it has no effect on the rest of the sound or the rest of the notes on the instrument.
HOT SPOT: This is a frequency range that is louder than it should be for balance, “equalization” and desirable tone; Usually having more energy to a fault and commonly is in intermittent points in a recording.
SIBILANCE: Vocal “S” or “T” sounds
that are louder than desired. Many times causing distraction when listening to the recording. I.C.E. can reduce the gain of these sibilant elements and in addition reduce the inherent distortion and create a smoother tone. For this reason, I.C.E. works better than a de-esser.
DYNAMIC: Change in the volume. When using I.C.E., the process is increased in direct proportion to the volume of the original source. So if a source target area is increased in volume, I.C.E. “tames” that chosen area in direct proportion. A ”compression-like ” process happens but only to the selected Frequency Band. The cleanup process happens in proportion, as well, making I.C.E. preferable to a common compressor.
ARTIFACTS: technically- Undesired or unintended alteration in data introduced in digital processing. This is usually low-level background or noise floor sound that is apparent in the soundscape causing undesired reproduction of the original sound. Causes are digital recording systems, plug-ins, and latency inconsistencies. I.C.E. has no artifacts and has Zero Latency. I.C.E. can reduce or remove artifacts in the chosen Frequency Bands.
I.C.E. Note: Scanning with a small frequency band on Gentle Slope will disclose "pockets" of distortion. Diminishing these pockets by using I.C.E. will clean up the sound. |
I.C.E. Note: You can use I.C.E. and I.C.E. PLUS (Boost) on any track or mix to "sculpt" the sound. |

Known Issues
1. The Save feature Saves as expected, but if the setting is changed, it wont go to the previously saved setting unless you go to the save folder and re-select it.
It is accurate on the re-selection.
2. Nearly all of the Pro Tools automation functions work. The only exception we could find is the function of changing the Low and High settings via Automation.
3. Nearly all of the Windows VST automation functions work. Some features may behave differently based on the Audio Application being used.
4. soundBlade Users: In version 1.1. the Meters in I.C.E. may freeze when stopping playback. This only occurs when using ICE as a Desk Event and does not happen in other audio software we've tested.
Appendix A -- I.C.E. Tips & Tricks
1. For more powerful treatment of the same problem use 2 or more instances of I.C.E.
2. Sometimes the best procedure is to I.C.E. the playback of your stereo master and I.C.E. again on the playback of the Mastered version.
3. Try a frequency band of 30 to 50 Hz on Boost to add missing Sub-Bass to the Mix or Master.
4. Try adding "air" and harmonics with a frequency band from 12 to 14k on Boost.
5. Boost is very precision. A maximum setting of -144 adds about 4 DB of round sound. Two instances of I.C.E. on Boost adds more than 8 DB.
6. Scanning with a small frequency band on Gentle Slope will disclose "pockets" of distortion. Diminishing these pockets by using I.C.E. will clean up the sound.
7. You can use I.C.E. and I.C.E. PLUS (Boost) on any track or mix to "sculpt" the sound.
8. Using multiple instances of I.C.E. on a vocal track can literally change the sound as if a different Mic was used to record the vocal.
9. You can increase or decrease the volume of a solo using I.C.E. either manually or via Automation in a mixed stereo track.
10. I.C.E. can be set to have no effect until a specific event or dynamic occurs.
11. I.C.E. on Boost Mode adds an exact copy of the original frequency band selected -adding gain without changing tone.
12. I.C.E. uses no compressor or EQ, but achieves similar results in a purifying manner.
13. I.C.E. can reduce or eliminate specific distortion inherent in a vocal, instrument, or audio source.
14. I.C.E. can be used in a live sound situation.
